October has arrived…it is time to celebrate Lights On Afterschool on October 23, 2014!

Lights on Afterschool (LOAS) is the only nationwide event celebrating afterschool programs and their important role in the lives of children, families and communities.  This is an excellent opportunity to draw attention to the many ways afterschool and summer programs support students by offering them opportunities to learn new things—such as science, community service, robotics, arts and poetry—and discover new skills. The events send a powerful message that millions more kids need quality afterschool programs.

We encourage all after school programs in Nebraska to plan a Lights on Afterschool event and invite local community members, local and state policy makers and businesses to your events.  Please visit the Lights on Afterschool page on the Beyond School Bells website for a number of STEM event ideas for this celebration.  Additionally, sample outreach materials are available on our website to help publicize and invite others to your event.

If you are planning a Lights On event in your community, make sure you go to the Afterschool Alliance website to register your program so that our national partners are aware of all the great afterschool work going on in Nebraska.  Please register each site (if you are having events at multiple schools/sites) on the website.
